Hello Fall!

And so the Fall Semester begins again! Start it off right by going to Recurso’s first General Body Meeting, on Sept. 6 in RNK 110 @ 6:30 PM.

Florida Organic Growers will be there with an awesome presentation on Local Sustainable Agriculture and….INTERNSHIP OPPORTUNITIES!

I personally interned at Florida Organic Growers last semester and had an amazing time learning the ins and outs of a not-for-profit and some tips on how to grow my own organic food.

So come out, meet some amazing people that care about international and local issues having to do with sustainability, human rights and the environment.

We also are looking for members who want to help out with upcoming events, such as our annual Fair Trade Fair and to join us in intramural volleyball!

Hope to see you there and have an awesome start of the year!

Welcome Back “Recurso Group” !

After 2 1/2 amazing weeks in Nicaragua, Team Nica 2011 is back with wonderful stories and memorable adventures. We visited “La Chureca” (The Dump), a landfill in Managua where locals make a living collecting recyclables from the trash. We painted La Casa de Esperanza (House of Hope), a halfway house for women and girls who have escaped lives of prostitution and are learning new skills which would allow them to contribute to society in different ways. In Puerto Cabezas, Team Nica finished the ongoing construction of a local school by mixing and pouring the concrete floors and painting the roof. Additionally, in both cities of Managua and Puerto Cabezas, we put on dental hygiene skits for school children and provided them  with fluoride treatments, toothbrushes, and toothpaste.

Interspersed with hard work, Team Nica had a ton of fun singing the lyrics to “Danza Kuduro”, taking a local Zumba class, jumping off a cliff into the Taupi River, and zip-lining in Granada!

For Team Nica 2011, the impact that we may have had on the communities that we visited does not compare to the impact these communities have had on us. Personal growth had been an important part of this journey, whether part of it it was experiencing a new culture, seeing poverty in a different light, or making connections with local kids.

A special thanks to our 2011 Trip Leaders: Olga Luaces, Jonathan Urrutia, Luis Roca, Frank Moore, and Russell Moore! Without you guys our trip would not have been the success that it was!

But it doesn’t end there! Recurso has a bunch of exciting events lined up for the Fall such as our Fair Trade Fair, volleyball intramurals, and socials!  Keep checking out our website for future events!

Educational Justice on a Global Scale

“What are the purposes of education? How should educational goods and opportunities be distributed? Much philosophical investigation of the role of education within the borders of developed countries has been done, but less has been done to answer these questions from the perspective of less wealthy nations. In this talk I will examine some of the more prominent philosophical views regarding the aims and distribution of education within the US and UK, and begin exploring the ways in which they might inform an approach to international educational justice.”

Philosophy Professor Jaime Ahlberg will be addressing these issues on March 15 at 6:30pm in Matherly 112.  A talk of this sort is important because knowing what educational justice demands will properly guide our actions in development work.
